Okay so I’m not sure how to answer this quickly so this should be interesting!
Well, they waited a couple of years after getting married to start thinking about children because there was so much going on in the world and it put children on the back of their minds for a little while, I guess, but when Katara got pregnant for the first time, it was unexpected. Their first kid was a girl, and eventually a waterbender. Then, their second kid was a nonbender, and a boy. And then, of course, their youngest is Tenzin. They weren’t really concerned about “repopulating the Airbenders” because two people being responsible for repopulating a fucking nation is ridiculous *cough* Kataang fics*cough*. They knew they had to have at least one airbender at some point, and then Tenzin ended up being that one airbender, and they stopped having children.
Katara taught their daughter waterbending, with some guidance from Aang, though teaching waterbending is hardly his strong suit, and Tenzin obviously learned airbendng from Aang. When their first child was born, they lived in the then-new Republic City as it was being established, and then Air Temple Island was built around the time Katara was pregnant with their second child, so they lived there from then on, making frequent trips to the Southern Water Tribe, though. Aang was literally the Maes Hughes of the Avatar world and would gush about his wife and children to anyone who would listen, and once telephones were invented, he would call Zuko to have fairly one-sided conversations about their children and would proudly show portraits or photographs (when cameras are invented) to his friends and the diplomats or other people of power who he found himself around. Katara was a very nurturing and caring mother, though she wouldn’t let the kids get away with things. She was more of the responsible parent while Aang was the “fun” one.
And then when they visited the Southern Water Tribe, penguin sledding expeditions were a mandatory tradition.
And Aang gave the best/worst dating advice to Tenzin. Best, because the advice he gives Tenzin worked in his favor for Katara, but worst because his advice is hardly relevant to Tenzin or impossible to carry out in Republic City. (Where the hell does one woo a girl by taking her penguin sledding in a modernized city? There are no panda lillies in urban Republic City, Dad!)
And of course, they told their children stories about their adventures frequently when they were younger, and spent a lot of time as a family.
